What is Roger Select?

Roger Select is a wireless microphone that helps people with hearing loss to understand better in noise and over distance.

In which situations can Roger Select be used?

Roger Select can be used in many different situations, such as

  • In restaurants, cafés, etc.
  • In small group conversations with up to six participants
  • In one-on-one conversations with a friend, partner or caregiver
  • During lectures or in class
  • Outdoors and indoors activities (gym, guided tour)
  • Watching TV
  • Phone calls
  • Audio / voice from the computer, radio

In which situations are other solutions than Roger Select recommended?

  • Large group conversations with more than six participants; for such situations one or multiple Roger Table Mic II are recommended.
  • When the user prefers to hold the wireless microphone in hand and point it in the direction of a talker, for such situations Roger On is recommended.

Is there evidence, that Roger Select improves speech understanding?

Yes, a study by Linda Thibodeau, PhD, of the University of Texas at Dallas has shown that speech understanding is improved by 61% in a group conversation in loud noise compared to using hearing aids alone.

What makes Roger Select different from other wireless microphones?

Roger Select features MultiBeam Technology which is a new generation of microphone technology that combines an array of microphones with advanced automatic functionality to focus exclusively on one speaker in the group. It will seamlessly change focus as the speaker changes from one person to the next.

  • The user can also manually steer the directional microphone to focus on a specific talker and to exclude others that are talking at the same time.

Does Roger Select work with any hearing system?

Roger Select works with most hearing aids, cochlear implants and Bahas. A

Roger receiver is required to bring the signal from Roger Select into the hearing system. For most Phonak hearing aids as well for all recent cochlear implant sound processor, there is a design integrated Roger receiver. For other hearing aids, the universal Roger X or Roger MyLink can be used.

How many listeners can listen to Roger Select?

An unlimited number of users with Roger receivers can be connected to a Roger Select.

Why is Roger Select round and not long like the Roger Pen?

Roger Select has a touch pad that allows you to select the direction to focus on a specific talker. A round shape supports the ease of use of this unique feature.

Roger Select Setup FAQs

How do I need to setup the hearing aid?

Most HI / CI automatically switch the program when Roger Select is switched on. Some need a manual program (e.g. EXT / DAI or T-Coil)

How do I connect Roger Select to my hearing aids / cochlear implant?

Hold Roger Select close to the receiver and briefly press the connect button, a green LED confirms connection. This has to be done only once, Roger Select remains connected.

What are the technical characteristics (operating time, range, latency of Roger Select)?

Operating time: Up to 8 hours
Range Roger Select to Roger receiver: Typically 10 meters / 30 feet, ideal conditions 20 meters / 60 feet
Latency: Mic to receiver output: 17 ms

How many microphones are in Roger Select?

MultiBeam Technology utilizes three omnidirectional microphones arranged in an equilateral triangle, each microphone in the array can act as either a front or rear microphone for either of the other two microphones. The directional behavior then becomes

equivalent to six directional microphones, creating a full 360° pattern.

Can I combine Roger microphones?

Yes, Roger Select can be combined with other microphones. It is recommended to use Roger Select with other Roger Select or Roger Table Mic II for best listening experience.

When Roger Select is used with other microphones, it has

to be worn by a talker on the chest. When you place Roger Select on the table, it will mute automatically. Unmuting Roger Select will mute the other microphones that are connected with the Roger Select. Muting Roger Select or wearing it on the chest will reactive the other microphones again.

How do I reset the Roger Select?

Complete reset: Press On/off and Bluetooth together for 10 seconds
Disconnect (NewNet): Press Connect for 10 seconds
Bluetooth reset: Press Connect and Bluetooth together for 10 seconds.

Roger Select daily use

After switching Roger Select on, in what microphone mode is it?

It depends on the orientation of the device. When Roger Select is flat or held horizontally (< 45°) in the hand, it will activate the all-around microphone using MultiBeam technology.

When Roger Select is worn vertically (> 45°) on the chest it will activate a directional microphone that points upwards.

Roger Select continuously monitors its orientation using an accelerometer and changes the microphone mode within a few seconds when the orientation has changed.

What can clients do to improve understanding using Roger Select?

  • Always bring Roger Select as close to the speakers as possible.
  • When Roger Select is worn on the chest, then it should be worn in the center of the body.
  • When Roger Select is on the table you may tap the device to active only the directions where a talker sits.
  • Avoid hiding Roger Select behind glasses, computer screens or other objects.

Is it possible to listen to an audio device and the microphone in parallel?

Yes, after plugging the audio cable your client can activate the microphone by tapping the center of the device. Note it will be in omni and steering is not possible.

How can Roger Select be connected with a phone?

Bluetooth wireless technology provides an easy way to connect the Roger Select with a phone. When the phone does not support Bluetooth, then alternatively adaptors and cables can be used. Please check the ‘Phone calls made easy with Roger’ brochure.

Is Roger Select compatible with any phone / computer?

In most cases yes, Roger Select supports Bluetooth version 4.0.
Ask the dealer of the phone or computer to clarify compatibility questions.

With what types of devices can a client make phone calls?

Roger Select can be connected to any device that is capable of doing phone calls such as cell phone, landline phones, etc. Provided the device has a Bluetooth or a Bluetooth hub connected.

When your client uses a computer, your client can make phone calls using VoIP services such as Skype.

Can Roger Select be turned off while still remaining connected to the phone / computer?

Yes, a short press on the on/off button will put Roger Select into standby mode, this means the microphones are turned off but Roger Select is still connected with your phone / computer.

A long press on the on/off button will switch off Roger Select completely, this means Roger Select is no longer connected with the phone / computer.

It is recommended to switch Roger Select off completely if no phone call is expected to reduce battery consumption.

Can my client listen to music via Bluetooth?

Most phone / computer stream music using A2DP profile which is not supported by Roger Select due to technical reasons. Some phone settings or apps allow you to convert music into headset or hands free profile and then your client can listen to music via Roger Select. Please ask the phone dealer for options.

Using multiple microphones

How many other microphones can be connected with Roger Select?

Up to 10 Roger microphones can be connected in a network.

Which speaker has priority?

Every microphone has the same priority, the device that detects the voice first will transmit its voice until the speaker stops speaking (another speaker cannot interrupt).

Note that if the audio cable is plugged directly into Roger Select, it will always be active and no other microphone is able to transmit.

Why is it not possible to use multiple Roger Select on the table?

Due to technical reasons it is not possible to use multiple Roger Select on the table. If such a setup is required, it is recommended to use Roger Table Mic II.

When Roger Select is used with other microphones, it has to be worn by a talker on the chest. When you place Roger Select on the table, it will mute automatically.

Unmuting Roger Select will mute the other microphones that are connected with the Roger Select. Muting Roger Select or wearing it on the chest will reactivate the other microphones again.
